Mycotoxin Testing

What Is Mycotoxin Testing?

Mycotoxin testing screens for toxic substances produced by certain molds and fungi that can contaminate cannabis during cultivation.

What We Test For:

Aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2)

Aflatoxins are a group of toxic compounds produced by certain molds (Aspergillus species), which can grow on agricultural products like cannabis, particularly when stored in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Aflatoxins are classified as carcinogens, and their presence in cannabis products can be extremely dangerous to consumers, potentially causing liver damage, immune system suppression, and even cancer.

There are four primary types of aflatoxins that we test for:

  • Aflatoxin B1: This is the most toxic and carcinogenic aflatoxin. Even in small amounts, B1 can pose a serious health risk, so it is critical that cannabis products are thoroughly screened to ensure no contamination.
  • Aflatoxin B2: While less toxic than B1, B2 can still pose health risks when consumed over time. It is often found alongside Aflatoxin B1 and must be rigorously tested to ensure product safety.
  • Aflatoxin G1: Another potent carcinogen, G1 is typically found in lower concentrations than B1 but remains a significant health concern when present in cannabis or hemp products.
  • Aflatoxin G2: Similar to B2, Aflatoxin G2 is less toxic than G1 but can still be harmful if ingested over time. Testing for G2 helps provide a full spectrum of aflatoxin contamination in a product.

Testing for these four types of aflatoxins ensures that your products meet safety standards and comply with regulations, protecting both your consumers and your business from liability.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is another dangerous mycotoxin produced by certain molds, including Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Like aflatoxins, Ochratoxin A can grow on improperly stored or poorly processed cannabis, particularly in conditions of high humidity. OTA has been linked to kidney damage, immunosuppression, and potential carcinogenic effects.

The presence of Ochratoxin A in cannabis products can result in serious health risks for consumers, including:

  • Kidney toxicity: Prolonged exposure to Ochratoxin A has been associated with kidney damage, which can lead to chronic health issues such as nephropathy (kidney disease).
  • Immune suppression: Exposure to OTA can weaken the immune system, making consumers more vulnerable to infections and other health complications.
  • Potential carcinogen: Like aflatoxins, Ochratoxin A is classified as a possible human carcinogen, meaning it may increase the risk of cancer if consumed over time.

Testing for Ochratoxin A ensures that your cannabis products are safe for consumption and meet all regulatory guidelines, protecting both your customers and your brand from potential health risks.

Why Is Mycotoxin Testing Important?

Mycotoxins can cause serious health issues if ingested or inhaled. Testing for these toxins is essential to ensure consumer safety, particularly for medical cannabis patients. Regulatory agencies require mycotoxin testing to ensure products meet safety standards.
